I have followed Sophie’s work for many years and have always been struck by her amazing versatility and creative drive.  In the years following her time as a full time student at West Dean College, where she completed her degree in Fine Art, she has developed a very distinctive style and has continued to develop her practice, particularly with regard to land/sea and skyscapes.

Now working mainly in oil or soft pastel, she has been able to demonstrate her talent for capturing the essence of her subject with strong, bold mark-making and a dynamic colour palette. She builds the atmosphere and mood of her subject often over many sessions and sometimes returning to old work with fresh eyes and ideas. Whether it is a lone bench looking out towards a stunning vivid horizon or a tunnel of trees and undergrowth, it is both enriching and engaging.

She does not limit herself to the landscapes of Anglesey that surrounded her for much of her earlier life or in Surrey and now West Sussex, but uses these influences to feed her creativity and imagination. The results are stunning.

I have collected Sophie’s paintings over the last 20 years. They simply get better and better. Evocative and atmospheric. Always beautifully framed to suit each individual painting.

Sophie’s work has developed and changed over the twenty years or so that we have enjoyed her work. We are lucky to own several of her paintings from various eras of her career, and each of these delivers a deeply rewarding delight.

My partner and I have followed Sophie’s career for many years now and are fortunate to own a few of her works. Her most recent works (2023) are a perfect example of why we love her paintings: they showcase the land and skyscapes inspired by her childhood in Anglesey and using oils and now soft pastels, she captures the atmosphere beautifully.

The first thing that struck me about Sophie Keir’s latest work was the atmospheric wash of colour. Her sea and skyscape gave me an immediate feeling of being there – in the sea and below the sky. I loved the grey and the red stormy lights in many of the paintings and the sense of land, sea and sky merging and yet distinct.

The print I bought  – Skyscape No 6 – was paler with blue/greys and reds with pinks and white, like silk material. Lovely.

The paintings conjured up Wales and the South of England both of which she knows so well and then Scotland and Sussex that I know so well … but also stuff of imagination anywhere and everywhere.

I wish I had room for one of the bigger paintings on my wall.
